An essential skill

As a skill, active listening is music productions' equivalent of, and builds upon critical thinking.

It's also a valuable tool for accessing one's own music production knowledge and skillset. As well as learning to identify fields for growth through discovering one's unknown unknowns. By becoming aware of everything we don't know. It's a way of asking oneself questions which are driving our next actions.

For example, experienced active listeners are able to:

  • visualize the settings of a sound they hear into its components
  • deconstruct the sum of a track into its individual parts: sounds and how they've been made, what they hear into individual pattern data etcpp.
