Technically, air is often referred to as high frequency range, or the top-end of a mix. Thus, existing above the 10-12khz range.
I understand air as an open-ended quality of a mixes’ sound stage. That allows for perceiving the space between, or around the notes. As well as the distance between the front and the back of a mix.
If you literally want to understand air: go into your bathroom and focus on what you hear. Then go outside, and listen again.
